BBC announce Peter Kay sitcom to be shown first on iPlayer

Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One and Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning have commissioned a 6 x 30-minute sitcom from Peter Kay called Car Share. This is the first Peter Kay sitcom for BBC One and will premiere on BBC iPlayer.

Created by Tim Reid and Paul Coleman, Car Share is directed by and stars Peter alongside Sian Gibson. They play John and Kayleigh who have been thrown together in a company car share scheme, forcing their paths to cross as they journey to their respective jobs at a major out-of-town supermarket. Each journey brings fresh insight into John and Kayleigh's lives, with twists and turns in their unlikely relationship. The series is set and will be filmed in the north-west.

Coming first to BBC iPlayer before being broadcast on BBC One, Peter Kay’s Car Share is part of BBC iPlayer’s strategy to showcase a wider range of TV content. This will be the first-ever series to premiere on BBC iPlayer in its entirety before a linear transmission, as part of a 40-hour content trial, approved by the BBC Trust.

Danny Cohen says: "It is hugely exciting that Peter Kay is coming to BBC One with his new series - even more so with the innovative plan we have to launch the show online."

Shane Allen says: "Everyone adores Peter. It’s bold and exciting for him to head in a more naturalistic comedy direction with this project. It will be a nifty new addition to his incredible body of work and the way it is being launched is very canny.”

Peter Kay says: “To be finally working with the BBC on a new comedy is a great opportunity. And the idea of two people car sharing to work each day really appealed to me, as it highlights the comedy in the minutiae of the daily trek and allows the spiralling conversations of life to unwind in all of their glory."
