Bake off goes free form

Four weeks in and it already looked like we knew who was going to win this year’s Great British Bake Off. With Ian winning three out of four Star Baker awards, the rest of the Bake Off tent were back this week with something to prove, and boy did they give him a run for his money.

First task, sugarless cakes - not my kind of cake but some of them looked incredible. As boring as it looked, Alvin’s Pineapple Upside Down Cake did sound ridiculously tasty, as did Mat’s Carrot Cake. Though it wasn’t good news for everyone. Not only did we nearly see another ‘Baked Alaska’ incident from Ugne’s Chocolate and Hazelnut Sugar Free Cake, Star Baker Ian didn’t get off to a great start. Deciding to sweeten his cake using pears, his decision didn’t go down well with Mr Hollywood.

Next came the Pitta Bread technical challenge. How people don’t know what shape pitta bread is makes no sense to me whatsoever, though Alvin’s sly questioning of whether Mat and Paul were going to make theirs circular or triangular was pure brilliance. With Nadiya winning the challenge, an absolute shocker to everyone who’s watched previous episodes, Ian’s crown was slowly slipping away…

With a Dairy-Free Ice Cream roll as the showstopper, it seemed that the Star Baker Award was wide open. Bright green ice cream, bikini clad fondant women, a cracked pineapple sponge, we saw it all. Always one of the most nerve wracking episodes to watch, I’m pretty sure everyone felt for Mat as his ice cream turned into cream.

It was a tense episode, but thanks to a spot on technical challenge there was only really one winner and one very clear loser. With Nadiya taking the Star Baker title there was disappointment for Ugna as she was sent packing.

But the Tweet of the Night came from contestant Mat as he admitted his biggest regret of the episode.

With Pastry Week coming up next, we can only hope there’s no soggy bottoms in sight…
