GBBO: Pastry week fails to impress


This week the bakers were starting to get serious as week six was pastry week.  We all knew it was coming, and we were waiting for it. That’s right, the infamous soggy bottom – ooh err missus!   This week kicked off with savoury and sweet samosas.  Traditional and modern flavours were in attendance.  This week’s technical challenge had a Prue-French tinge with Puits d'amour.  A provocative “well of love” with five, yes five, individual elements for the bakers to master.  Finally, the bakers had to contend with making a stunning pie which is fit for a Tudor banquet.  I don’t know quite why but I wasn’t feeling this week’s episode.  The humour seemed a bit missing and I have to say that there are just too many Hollywood handshakes going on this series.

In a week of crispy delights and crying at the window the highlights were:

Flaky pastry of the week:
  • Ruby made “beautiful” traditional samosas and “delicious” sweet ones. She even got a handshake.
  • Briony made “the most beautiful samosas” Paul had ever seen.
  • Rahul got two judge’s handshakes with “absolutely delicious” samosas.
  • Briony made “beautiful” pastry for her puits d’amour and came first in the technical.
  • Ruby’s curry pie was “a great pie”.
  • Briony’s Alice in Wonderland pie looked stunning and Prue got a drink of port with it.
             
Soggy bottoms of the week:
  • Dan tried to use a pasta machine to make his samosas. It didn’t work, and his second batch was terrible.
  • Dan’s samosas were impossible to cut, and Prue spat hers out. 
  • Manon’s samosas were bland.
  • Dan cried by the tent window when his pastry didn’t rise for his puits d’amour. And his custard split.
  • Manon burned her pastry and didn’t put enough filling in her puits  d’amour.
  • Ruby “cremated” her puits d’amour.
  • Dan’s pie was a pure disaster.  Completely raw and decorated at the last minute and looked like a monkfish.
  • Manon left paper on her raw, salty and dry pie.

 Sandi and Noel highlights of the week:
  • Noel can’t juggle eggs, but he hides them well when they hit the floor.
  • Noel went back to the 70s eating flying saucers.
 Star baker: Briony.  As Prue said she bust out and started blooming.  That pie was an absolute stunner.

Who left the tent: Dan. His samosas were poor, his technical a disaster and his showstopper inedible. He also proved that sometimes all you need is a rolling pin for pastry and to leave the pasta machine for pasta.

Who’s for the chopping board next week?: Manon.  After her disasters this week her time looks like it is coming to an end.
