Ben Miller to leave Death in Paradise. Kris Marshall to join the cast.

It has been announced that Kris Marshall (Lightfields, My Family) is to join the cast of BBC One's hit crime drama Death In Paradise as the latest lead detective, in the new series.

Series three will also see the departure of DI Richard Poole, played by Ben Miller (Primeval, Armstrong & Miller). However, details of how and when Miller will depart remain tightly under wraps.

Joining series regulars Sara Martins, Danny John-Jules, Gary Carr and Don Warrington when filming starts on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe from next month, Marshall will play a bright, but rather disorganised and gawky DI, Humphrey Goodman, who is stuck in a mid-life rut and is looking to find a new life and fresh start.

Kris Marshall said: "I am thrilled to be joining Death In Paradise and finding out a bit more about what makes Humphrey tick. Six months filming on a tropical island with an amazing cast and glorious sunshine? What isn't there to love! I might even get myself a parrot!"

Following two hugely successful series', Miller leaves the show on a high, with an average of almost eight million viewers tuning in to each episode of the second series.

Ben Miller said: "I have absolutely loved my time on Death In Paradise and am sad to be leaving such a successful show, however DI Poole has made no secret of his struggle with the Caribbean heat, so I felt now was a good time to put him out of his misery! I know Kris will do a superb job and I'm delighted to be handing over the detective baton to him."

Belinda Campbell, Executive Producer, Red Planet Pictures, said: "Ben Miller is an excellent actor and has played the part of DI Richard Poole magnificently for two series, and we're very sad to be saying goodbye. However we're thrilled to be welcoming Kris Marshall on board who we know will be brilliant in the role of Humphrey. He will bring with him dishevelled charm, sparkle, quick wit, and a razor-sharp intelligence in solving crimes."

Ben Stephenson, BBC Controller Drama Commissioning, said: "Thank you to Ben for leading two hugely successful series of Death In Paradise. He is leaving on a high and handing over to the very talented Kris Marshall. I am looking forward to seeing Kris in his new role and what he does with his character."

It was announced earlier this year that the ratings smash crime drama series, renowned for its weekly measure of whodunit mystery and stunning Caribbean backdrop, will be returning for a third series in early 2014.

My husband and I love "Death in Paradise" and look forward to watching it every week. We are huge fans of Ben Miller and were very upset when he was "killed". We will miss him terribly!
But, we were very pleased with Kris Marshall as his replacement because we were delighted with his character too. And he handled Richard's murder splendidly.
We will look forward to seeing Ben Miller in something new soon.

I am so upset, disappointed, sad that Ben Miller was left "Death in Paradise". Why did the producers let him go??? HE IS THE SHOW!!!! I'm sure Kris Marshall will do a fine job but, really, there is NO ONE who can replace Ben Miller. Why did they kill him off? They could have let him return to England for a time, then brought him back because he missed the island and his friends. I am so upset. Nancy in Houston, Texas

love the show-really like kris marshall--the Camille character is wooden--maybe they can kill her off,in a murder and get her sister-the incredibly talented inspector to bounce off kris ,the other talented inspector. of equal rank and trying to prove which is best--like the thin man.remember.

My husband and I were really disappointed that DI Poole was killed off. At first I did not like the new DI, but by the end of the show we felt he was a good replacement and look forward to future episodes. Glad to see the rest of cast is remaining -- they all seem to work well together. Who knows, there could be romance between Camille and "Hump" since his wife is leaving him. Good choice for a replacement of Poole.

just looked up "death in paradise" (cheating like looking at the last page of a book) but i so enjoyed the chemistry between Poole and Camile, that i wanted to see if they became lovers, or better yet, married by the end of the series.
imagine when i learned instead that Poole is killed.
