Chris Lilley's Jonah from Tonga to Premiere on BBC iPlayer

The BBC have announced that all six episodes of Chris Lilley's new Summer Heights High spin-off Jonah from Tonga will be available on the iPlayer ahead of their BBC Three transmission.

As part of an international simulcast with ABC Australia's iview, the entire series of Jonah from Tonga will appear on the iPlayer from Friday 2nd May. The episodes, which will be available for 48 hours, will then be shown weekly on BBC3 from Thursday 8th May.

The series catches up with 14-year-old rebellious schoolboy Jonah Takalua (Lilley), his family, friends and the crew of teachers and counsellors who are exhaustively trying to help him channel his seemingly limitless energy into bigger and brighter things.

When we last saw Jonah he was expelled from Summer Heights High, causing his father Rocky to banish him back to his native Tonga to teach him a hard life lesson. After serving his time in Tonga, his father and aunty decide to start a brand-new life for the boy with ‘angel eyes’ at Holy Cross - a Catholic high school in Sydney’s western suburbs.

Jonah might be in a brand-new school but he’s quick to mark his familiar territory and establishes a gang of like-minded kids who are friendly with all except ‘The Rangas’. Under the watchful eye of his teachers and the school’s youth worker, Jonah finds it harder to rebel, but he is never one to shy away from a challenge.

It’s not long until he’s up to his old tricks and the Tongan troublemaker once again finds himself in plenty of hot water. With stacks of fights, frenemies, break-dancing and law-breaking, Jonah From Tonga is definitely one big wild ride.

Victoria Jaye, Head of TV Content, BBC iPlayer, said: “This is BBC iPlayer’s first collaboration with an international broadcaster to create an online TV event. For 48 hours only, iPlayer audiences will be given access to all episodes of Chris Lilley’s new comedy series ‘Jonah From Tonga’. We’re excited to see how this digital event sets light to social media activity from fans both here and on the other side of the world.”
