Last night the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were handed out and it was a great year for British talent. Matthew Rhys scooped the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama award for his role in The Americans whilst Claire Foy scooped the title Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her final series of The Crown. Other Brits who scored big were Thandie Newton who was honoured for her role in Westworld, Charlie Brooker who won an award for his writing on the latest series of Black Mirror, Stephen Daldry for directing The Crown and John Oliver for hosting Last Week Tonight.
The big winner of the night was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which took the title of Outstanding comedy show whilst actresses Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein were recognised for their performanes on the show. Meanwhile, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino won two awards for both writing and directing the series. The other big winner in the comedy category was Barry with stars Bill Hader and Henry Winkler taking home awards for their performances.
Game of Thrones won the Outstanding Drama Series award, after not being nominated last year due to where the cut-off for awards consideration fell. Peter Dinklage also won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a drama award for his role in the fantasy drama. The Assassination of Gianni Versace was the big winner in the Miniseries category with star Daren Criss winning an award for his performance as Andrew Cunanan whilst Ryan Murphy was also rewarded for his direction. Regina King won Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries for her role in Netflix's Seven Seconds whilst Merrit Wever and Jeff Daniels scooped supporting gongs for their performances in another Netflix drama; Godless.
Arguably the most memorable moment of the awards show came when producer and director Glenn Weiss; who won an award for his direction of this year's Oscar ceremony, used his speech to propose to his girlfriend.
