CUSTARD TV News Update: Nicola Walker & Sean Bean in new BBC drama, Tiger King and Russell T Davies Return

Nicola Walker and Sean Bean are to star together in new four-part drama Marriage. The series comes from Stefan Golaszewski, the writer behind Mum and Him & Her.

Marriage sees married couple Ian (Bean) and Emma (Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 30-year marriage. We see them dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship. Stefan Golaszewski said: “It’s amazing to get to work with Sean and Nicola. They’re actors of such depth, truth and warmth and I can’t wait to go on this journey with them.” Executive Producer for The Forge, Beth Willis added: “Stefan’s exquisite observation of marriage is funny, warm and searingly honest. His writing is a joy to read. I cannot wait to see Sean and Nicola bring to life this wonderful couple.”

* In news that no one was expecting, Russell T Davies is to return as showrunner for Doctor Who. His return will see him oversee the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who in 2023, and series beyond. It also sees BBC Studios partnering with Bad Wolf to produce. Responsible for Doctor Who’s revival in 2005, Davies is credited with propelling the show into a global phenomenon and making it one of TV’s biggest hits. His tenure on the show oversaw a surge in popularity, enjoying huge acclaim and success. The Doctor won the nation’s hearts through his masterful relaunch, which led him to create two spin-off series, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, during that time.

Davies left the show in 2009. A lifelong Doctor Who fan, he has most recently achieved huge success with Years And Years, A Very English Scandal and It’s A Sin, which won Best New Drama at the National TV Awards this month. Russell T Davies says: “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm - I’m still a viewer for now.”

Chris Chibnall says: It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him. Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales - and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world - have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.”

*ITV has released the trailer for 'The Larkins'. The series, which is expected next month is a new iteration of 90s' show The Darling Buds of May which stars Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan.

*Netflix has confirmed a second series of their HUGE hit Tiger King will air before the end of the year. The news comes with a raft of new documentaries.

*Channel 4 has commissioned a new international dating series, The Language of Love (w/t) The series will see a group of Brits and a group of Spaniards pairing up at a dreamy Spanish country estate to see if they can find romance… despite not speaking each other’s language.

Set in a stunning finca in Andalusia, the eight-part series for Channel 4 will be hosted by Davina McCall alongside Spanish TV host, actor and singer Ricky Merino, who will be on hand to interpret how the couples’ relationships are developing. A group of Brits seeking romance will travel to Spain where they’ll meet their potential partners – a group of Spanish speakers also looking for their own historia de amor – to test whether love is deeper than just words. Can sparks fly even with a language barrier to overcome? The newly-formed couples will take part in challenges and tasks to help them test their connection as well as learning more about each other’s countries, their culture and their languages. At the end of the series, will they choose amor or adiós? The international lovers will face a big dilemma: to call it quits, stay together long distance, or perhaps move country to be with their new found love.

*Sky have released a trailer for the second series of COBRA. The show’s second series stars Robert Carlyle as Prime Minster Robert Sutherland and Victoria Hamilton as his Chief of Staff Anna Marshall, and an ensemble cast featuring Richard Dormer, David Haig, Marsha Thomason and Richard Pepple. In the aftermath of both solar and political storms, Prime Minister Robert Sutherland attempts to steer the country on a more even course. He is assisted, as ever, by his loyal Chief of Staff Anna Marshall alongside a team of dedicated advisers. An assassination on British soil, however, unleashes a chain of events that threatens to develop into a crisis even more serious than the one from which the country has recently emerged. An invisible global enemy, not playing by the rules and operating outside national boundaries, appears to be bent on our destruction, leaving an entire country unsure as to who is friend and who is foe.

The series, which is created and written by Ben Richards, looks at what happens when cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure and fake news are used to subvert democracy. All six episodes of COBRA: CYBERWAR will be available on 15th October on Sky Max and streaming service NOW.
