Bake Off returns: What were the highlights??

by | Aug 30, 2018 | All, Reviews

It’s back! And so am I!  The return of the bake off – the friendliest cooking show on the planet.  And in a twist to the normal running order, this year we kick off with biscuit week. All the cast were back, with haircuts, and on top comedic form reminding us of how last year’s changes have refreshed and lifted the show. For their signature bakes this week they had to make regional biscuits – very historical!  Empire biscuits, Bollywood Goosnargh cakes and hair conditioner York biscuits. Paul’s technical challenge choice this week was the wagon wheel, one of the kings of the biscuit world.  At least everyone has eaten them (well, all normal people) unlike some of last year’s crazy challenges. Finally the showstopper challenge this week was to create a giant selfie biscuit. This was a great first-week challenge that allowed us to get to know more about this new batch of bakers (See what I did there? Batch? Oh forget it!).

In the week of Jammie Dodgers and soggy cookie the highlights were:

Custard creams of the week:

  • Anthony’s moreish Goosnargh biscuits with chilli jam.
  • Ruby’s shop quality wagon wheels. We’d all eat them. Let’s be honest.
  • Kim-Joy’s amazing looking selfie she painted the sky.
  • Terry fashioned himself out of remade brand snap – it looked more like Lenin though.
  • Manon’s selfie was a masterpiece to look at as well as eat.
  • And Noel’s new haircut – serving us Shakin’ Stevens realness.

Dry digestives of the week:

  • Terry’s awful undecorated biscuits – I still don’t know what they were supposed to be.
  • Karen’s wet ginger nuts.
  • Anthony’s exploded wagon wheels.
  • Dan’s prawn baby (it also looked like something else)
  • Jon’s lumpy lemon curd did not look appetising.

Sandi and Noel highlights of the week:

  • Noel dressed as Doc Brown and joking about Prue’s final faux pas from last year.
  • “Lovejoy? Is that like a flower?”
  • Noel’s KD Lang haircut.
  • Sandi has never eaten a wagon wheel. How is this possible?
  • Their game of makeshift ping pong.

Star baker: Manon. Her biscuits all tasted wonderful and looked fabulous. Well deserved this week.

Who left the tent: Imelda. Her wagon wheels were woeful and her selfie biscuit was bland.

Who’s for the chopping board next week?: Terry. He couldn’t make a decorated biscuit. Or marshmallow. Or chocolate. Or flour buttercream. Or brandy snap. He just managed to save himself with his impressionist showstopper.
