Tonight the BBC announced the commissioning of a raft of new drama including the return of two of its most recent successes.

After seemingly concluding with a four-part series in 2013; Luther will return for a new two-parter next year.

Idris Elba will return to the role of the troubled murder detective DCI John Luther for the special that is due to air next year.

Speaking at the event; Luther creator Neil Cross said, “Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”

Also returning will be the BBC Two co-produced Top of the Lake for a new six-part series set in and around Sydney, Australia.
