Today the list of TV programmes nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards was announced. Among the nominees were several Brits most notably Benedict Cumberbatch for his leading role in World War I drama Parade’s End. He is nominated in the Best Lead Actor in a miniseries or movie alongside Toby Jones who has been recognised for his role as Alfred Hitchcock in The Girl. Downton Abbey continues its stateside domination with nominations for Best Drama and nods for cast members Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter and Maggie Smith. Other British nominees include Damian Lewis for Homeland, Emilia Clarke for Game of Thrones and Helen Mirren for the TV Movie Phil Spector. BBC programmes Top of the Lake and Episodes have also been recognised the latter also earning a nod for lead actress Elisabeth Moss.

The comedy category is once again dominated by Modern Family which is nominated for Best Comedy Series and has five nominated actors in the supporting categories. In its final series 30 Rock has also achieved four major nominations including acting nods for Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Jane Krakowski. Armando Ianucci’s Veep and the critically-acclaimed Girls are also nominated for a number of major awards in the comedy category.

Alongside Downton Abbey, the drama category is led by Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men and last year’s winner Homeland. There’s also a fair bit of recognition for House of Cards, which was made exclusively for Netflix who uploaded all the episodes simultaneously. Netflix also brought about the return of Arrested Development which is recognised via a Lead Actor nomination for Jason Bateman.

Finally, possibly the oddest battle of the night is in the Outstanding Reality Show Host category as Cat Deeley battles it out with Betty White and Heidi Klum.
