Did we like it?
A comedy sketch show with a hit/miss ratio of six to four is just about good enough for us.
What was good about it?
• David Mitchell as Nigel Livid who storms into Channel 4’s headquarters to complain about Celebrity Big Brother. “As I sit alone in my room, grimly staring for hours at the images of a jungle clearing or a darkened dormitory, I don’t know who to hate more. The spineless swine who make this shit or the ogling mulch-brained scum who watch it in their millions. Or me. It’s me, isn’t it?! I should just stop watching. I’m so sorry. I’ve answered my own question.”
• David Mitchell as Colonel Rudd, the maverick vet who treats a man who has fallen off his motorcycle as he’d treat an injured bird – by breaking the neck.
• The Baron (aka Satan’s Runt) with his energetic proclamations: “I’m evil. I’m a pest, an absolute pest. I feed nuts to allergic orphans. I run around without verruca socks and I’ve got a verruca. I’m evil.”
• Nina Conti’s Trish, who only does comedy speak, requiring her boss to call on his PA to translate.
• The Phiddler Brothers being confronted by a park-keeper who pointed out the “No Paedos” sign in the playground.
• The lovely Rhys Thomas as suave seducer Malibu Man (catchphrase: “Oh blow”)
• The Good Old Days-style opening.
What was bad about it?
• Karate Johnson relied on his low-hanging bollocks to raise a laugh.
• Frank relied on childish fart and piss jokes to get a laugh.
• Euro singer Franco Franco’s song about his gay son (“to raise money for a brain operation to fix him”) was offensive – and not just because it was set to the Van Der Valk theme.
• We just didn’t get the Mr Whippy and son sketch
