Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, today announced Charlotte Moore as the new Controller of BBC One.

Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, said: “Charlotte has proven herself as a highly talented creative leader, with fantastic credentials as a commissioner and a reputation as a thoughtful and collaborative colleague. She has a passion for storytelling and a real understanding of audiences and BBC One’s commitment to scale, range and risk-taking. I am looking forward to her joining my new senior management team on a permanent basis and leading the channel to great future success.”

BBC Director-General, Tony Hall, said: “This is a very critical appointment. I was really excited by Charlotte’s ideas and vision, they have a boldness and originality that is absolutely what the channel should offer.”

On her new appointment, Charlotte Moore said: “Running BBC One is the most exciting and creative job in television and I’m honoured to be taking over as the new Controller. Under Danny Cohen’s leadership the flagship channel has enjoyed great success and it’s a huge privilege to be part of its future. BBC One has a unique role to play in this country and I’m looking forward to working with many talented people. I’m incredibly excited by Danny’s vision for BBC Television and what the future holds in the digital age.”

Currently Acting Controller of BBC One, Charlotte has been running Britain’s most watched channel since May, and spent the first part of the year as the Acting Controller of BBC Daytime Television.

Since 2009, Charlotte has been the BBC’s Commissioning Editor of Documentaries where she was responsible for strategy and commissioning for in-house and independents across all four channels. Under her leadership, Charlotte has modernised and transformed the genre to produce a huge breadth of original programming, seeking out the best talent to bring the most compelling and inspiring documentary content to a broad audience. From Bafta-winning titles Protecting Our Children, 7/7 One Day In London, The Great British Bake Off, Terry Pratchett’s Choosing To Die, The Choir and Welcome To Lagos to hit series like Inside Claridges, The Call Centre, Lambing Live and The Tube.

Charlotte has been instrumental in driving success; from distinctive, channel-defining hits underpinned by public service values to innovative programming that pushes boundaries and an unprecedented number of award-winning films.

In 2012, she took on the additional role of Commissioning Editor for Knowledge on BBC Three responsible for formats and specialist factual on the channel, including Our War and the upcoming Mental Health Season ‘It’s A Mad World’.

She joined the BBC in 2006 as Commissioning Executive for Documentaries. Prior to joining the BBC, Charlotte was Director of Contemporary Factual at IWC Media focusing on high-profile contemporary narrative documentaries and series for all the major UK channels, including BBC Two’s landmark series Stephen Fry: The Secret Life Of A Manic Depressive.

Charlotte started at Ideal World Productions in 2002 as a series producer and then became Head of Documentaries. Her career began travelling to remote corners of the world to make films about cannibals, disappearing tribes and stolen art. As a producer/director, Charlotte’s credits include award-winning series for BBC One, Living with Cancer, Lagos Airport (Channel 4) and Great Britons: Churchill (BBC Two).
