It was heavily promoted, stars one of the country’s biggest female actors and is written by a BAFTA winner. So perhaps it’s no great surprise that overnight ratings for ITV’s latest biopic Cilla drew impressive figures. According to the overnights the first of the three-part drama surrounding the early career of Cilla Black drew 6.7m viewers (including +1) That left BBC1’s New Tricks languishing behind with 4.22m. The crime drama is usually an unstoppable ratings force wherever the BBC place it in the schedules but this current 11th series appears to be bucking that trend and going into a steep decline week on week. With such impressive overnight figures Cilla could become this year’s Broadchurch for the channel.
