As expected ITV’s heavily promoted and heavily anticipated Downton Abbey returned to its biggest ratings last night. The ITV drama had  an average of 9.5m/39.6% (peak 10.5m; both include +1). In comparsion BBC1’s lacklustre crime drama By Any Means launched to 4.11m.

The trip to Downton wasn’t the biggest show of the night. That title went to ITV’s X Factor. The final arena auditions were seen by an average 9.8m/39% (inc. +1), its second most watched show of the series so far.
