The BBC have released the first TV trailer for upcoming BBC1 drama series Happy Valley. A new six-part drama for BBC One, written by Sally Wainwright and starring Sarah Lancashire as police sergeant Catherine Cawood.
Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is the sergeant on duty when flustered and nervous accountant Kevin Weatherill (Steve Pemberton) comes into her West Yorkshire police station to report a crime. He’s reticent about the details and Kevin loses his nerve. The crime he was trying to report was Kevin’s own brain-child, a plot to kidnap his boss’s daughter and keep enough of the ransom to put his kids through private school.
And now local drug king-pin Ashley Cowgill (Joe Armstrong) has put the plan into action, and Kevin’s fantasy has become a grim and dangerous reality. The botched kidnapping of Ann Gallagher (Charlie Murphy) and its fallout unfolds…
Catherine is used to picking up the pieces of everyone else’s lives, but the hunt for Ann Gallagher will get right under her skin. Catherine becomes convinced that only by finding Ann alive and bringing her captors to justice can she avenge the death of her daughter.
The series is much darker for Wainwright (Last Tango in Halifax) who said the show’s title comes from a nickname that the police have because of the drug taking. She goes on to say, “There’s a double meaning however, as the majority of people find it a very beautiful place to live and I’m so glad that we got to film there as it looks stunning on screen.
Sarah Lancashire, who stars in the lead role here says the series is much more more than a crime drama. “I think the tone of the piece changes quite dramatically. Certainly from about half way through, it becomes clear that the story isn’t really about Catherine’s job as a police officer but Catherine trying to find a way to come to peace with herself. It’s quite interesting because I had no idea how the story was going to unfold. It’s not about a police officer at all, it’s about a woman who is clearly very damaged by her experiences of losing a daughter and being put into a situation where she’s trying to get by day to day. Catherine has an incredibly emotional story, especially Episodes 4, 5 and 6 when it turns into an emotional marathon.”
We’ve been lucky enough to see a preview of the first episode and we’re going to be raving about it. Watch the trailer.
Happy Valley starts 9pm on Tuesday 29th April on BBC ONE.
