Mel B revealed as X-Factor judge

Mel B has been announced as the fourth X-Factor judge for this year’s new series.

Mel joins the returning Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole as well as mainstay judge Louis Walsh. Meanwhile Dermot O’Leary will return for his eighth series as host.

Mel previously appeared as a guest judge during the 2012 series where she lived up to her name with her straight-talking approach. Since then she has appeared as a judge on America’s Got Talent alongside Heidi Klum and Howard Stern.

Of the appointment Mel says, “I’m so excited to be joining The X Factor – I loved being a guest judge back in 2012. I’ve always thought honesty is the best policy when being a judge and that’s what I’m going to bring more of this year – whether it’s spotting an incredible singer, giving someone a reality check or debating with Simon over who’s got it wrong!  Now I can’t wait to get started and find some amazing talent.”

Simon Cowell adds, “I am thrilled that Mel B has agreed to be a judge on The X Factor this year. I thought she was fantastic as a guest judge a couple of years ago. She is feisty, opinionated and, I believe, will be a great mentor.”

The new series will see the return of the closed room auditions with the acts having to get a positive reaction before moving on the arena. The judges will be visiting Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Newcastle as they look for their new champion.

Of the new series Dermot O’Leary says, “Mel was great as a guest judge a couple of years ago and she certainly doesn’t mince her words. With Mel on the panel, along with Simon, Cheryl and Louis, I’ll have my hands full – we’re going to be in for an exciting year.”

ITV’s director of comedy and entertainment commented, “Mel and Cheryl have reached the top in two of the biggest girl bands in contemporary music history and they’re fantastic additions to this year’s panel, alongside Simon and Louis. All our judges are looking forward to finding some amazing vocal talent for X Factor 2014.”

The X-Factor returns later in the year.
