*Amazon Prime Video has set the return date for their award-winning comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The long-awaited fourth season will begin on Feb. 18, with two episodes debuting each week for four weeks. The fourth season, set in 1960, will follow on the events of the third season finale in which Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) lost a prime gig opening for pop star Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain) after speaking a little too frankly about Shy’s personal life during a stop on their tour. The COVID-delayed fourth season will feature two more alumni from Sherman-Palladino’s Gilmore Girls with Kelly Bishop and Milo Ventimiglia guest starring.
*The BBC has confirmed a second series of Stephen Merchant’s comedy-drama The Outlaws has already been filmed. Series one is the BBC’s biggest comedy launch this year and has been streamed 11m times on BBC iPlayer so far. Following on directly from the first series, The Outlaws still have time to serve on their sentences – but now they must face the fallout from their actions. If they thought the criminal underworld or the local police were done with them, they are sorely mistaken. The Outlaws must depend on one another while working with unlikely allies to atone for their sins — but can they save themselves without sacrificing their souls? The second series will see the return of Academy Award-winning actor Christopher Walken, alongside writer and star Stephen Merchant with Rhianne Barreto, Gamba Cole, Darren Boyd Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica Gunning, Charles Babalola, Nina Wadia, Tom Hanson and Aiyana Goodfellow as Esme. Confirmed guest stars for the new series include Julia Davis, Ian McElhinney, Dolly Wells and Claes Bang. The six-part second series is expected next year on BBC One and on Amazon Prime Video across the world.
*In an unusual move, ITV will allow viewers to watch their festive highlights on their time. The shows, which include flagship soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be available on the ITVHUB from 7am on the day they are due to air on ITV. The news comes as ITV lay out their Christmas highlights which include The Masked Singer Singalong and The Larkins Christmas Special both confirmed for Christmas Day with Billy Connolly documentary, My Absolute Pleasure confirmed for Boxing Day.
*Sky have confirmed that the second season of HBO’s acclaimed drama Euphoria will air on the same night as it does in the US on Sky Atlantic and NOW. Created, written, and directed by Sam Levinson, and starring Emmy winner Zendaya, Euphoria is set to return to Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW for its eight-episode second season from 10th January. Season 2 cast regulars include Emmy-winner Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, Javon Walton, Dominic Fike, Storm Reid and Austin Abrams. Season 1 of Euphoria received three Primetime Emmy® Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series (Zendaya), Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
*It’s official, BBC Three is returning to television. The news comes after Ofcom published their decision to approve the channel. The new broadcast channel will launch in early February 2022 and will be available on Freeview, Sky, Virgin and Freesat with EPG numbers to be confirmed at a later date. Commenting on the decision, Fiona Campbell, Controller BBC Three said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Ofcom have now confirmed that BBC Three will be returning to TV screens next year. This is a big moment, with the new channel providing a destination for young audiences to discover more content on the BBC. We will work hand in hand with iPlayer to provide a broad offering that is representative of the whole of the UK and we will continue to back new talent and bold ideas. This approach will bring the audience a distinctive mix of programmes that are there to entertain, inspire and challenge thinking, at a pivotal and exciting time to be young in the UK.”
*Netflix is to adapt One Day, the novel from David Nicholls as part of a commitment to original British drama on the streaming. Anne Mensah, Netflix’s vice president of U.K. series, said that five new dramas will all start shooting across Britain in 2022. The lineup includes a new adaptation of bestselling novel One Day and two series by Sister, the fast-rising production powerhouse behind Chernobyl. Mensah went on to say, “There’s an incredible roster of new shows for our members to view in 2022, from the searing Anatomy of a Scandal, to Rowan Atkinson’s joyous Man vs Bee, all the way to Joe Cornish’s outstanding Lockwood & Co — and more. We have a huge number of shows which have all shot this year under uniquely difficult circumstances but never lost their bold brilliance. To be able to add such a variety of new titles to our slate, knowing there is more to come, is really a testament to the strength and artistic confidence of the British television industry.”
*GOLD have commissioned new comedy Newark, Newark. Morgana Robinson (The Windsors) stars as Maxine, alongside Mathew Horne (Gavin & Stacey) as Terry and Nina Wadia (The Sandman) as Heather. Newark, Newark is set in the small working class market town in the East Midlands and follows pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch, Maxine, as she tries to ride out her divorce and find someone who actually lights her fire.
*Channel 4 has commissioned a new documentary series that will take viewers into the barrister’s chambers. With unprecedented access to one of the UK’s leading defence chambers – 25 Bedford Row – cameras will follow the barristers from the moment they are given a case, through the emotionally charged twists and turns of the judicial process, preparing for court and a dramatic, life-changing verdict. At stake could be the next 25 years of a client’s life and devastation for their families. The series has a working title of The Defenders and is expected in 2022.
*Channel 4 have released the first image of James Nesbitt and Richard E Grant in upcoming drama Suspect. When veteran detective, Danny Frater (James Nesbitt), turns up at a hospital mortuary for what he thinks is a routine ID check on a young woman’s body, he gets a devastating shock; the corpse turns out to be his estranged daughter, Christina (Imogen King). He sets out on a mission for the truth, retracing her last days and hours, in an agonising crusade to discover what really happened to his only child. The series also stars Joely Richardson, Anne-Marie Duff, Antonia Thomas, Niamh Algar, Sacha Dhawan, Sam Heughan and Ben Miller. The series will air on Channel 4 next year.
*ITV have commissioned a second series of comedy Kate & Koji. Brenda Blethyn will return as Kate with Okorie Chukwu taking over the role of Koji from Jimmy Akingbola, who is now in the US where he has a starring role in the reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Blake Harrison and Barbara Flynn will return in their roles as ‘Medium’ and Councillor Bone. The first series averaged just under 5 million viewers across the series run when first aired in 2020.
*HULU comedy PEN15 which airs on Sky Comedy, will end with its second season. The breakout comedy, created by and starring Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, will end in the US in December when the remaining episodes of the Covid hit second season arrive on HULU. The second season has yet to air in the UK.
*ITV have released the first trailer for upcoming drama Trigger Point. Written by Daniel Brierley and produced by HTM Television, Trigger Point, is billed as a high-octane thriller series which focuses on the bomb disposal unit who risk their lives daily on ‘the long walk’ towards danger. For them, death is always just a heartbeat away. Vicky McClure (Line of Duty, I Am Nicola) plays front line officer Lana Washington, who is an experienced bomb disposal operative, known as an ‘Expo’ and Adrian Lester (Life, Trauma) plays Joel Nutkins, who works alongside her. Both ex-military, the pair are close, having served together in Afghanistan. When a terrorist campaign threatens the capital over the summer, the Expos are at the forefront of urgent efforts to find out who is behind the bombings before fatalities escalate….. Mark Stanley (Honour) stars as DI Thom Youngblood. Further cast includes Warren Brown (Luther) as Karl Maguire, Kerry Godliman (After Life) as Sonya Reeves and Ralph Ineson (The Capture) as Commander Bregman. The six-part series is expected early in 2022 on ITV.
*Channel 4 has announced that Ashley Walters will make his directing debut in the upcoming return of Ackley Bridge. The ten-part series is expected in early 2022.
*The BBC have announced a second series of entertainment show, This is MY House. The guessing game format created by Richard Bacon and Nick Weidenfeld will once again see four people all claim to be the same person and that “This Is MY House”. A panel of celebrities will be tasked with sussing out which “homeowner” is telling the truth and which are the actors. The second series will air on BBC One in 2022.
*ITV have announced a brand new drama from Russell T Davies. Nolly explores the all-powerful reign, and fall from grace, of the inimitable Noele Gordon, TV legend and Queen of the Midlands, the darling of the establishment until it turned on her and betrayed her. Noele (or Nolly to her friends) was a legend in her own lifetime. As flame-haired widow Meg Richardson in the long-running soap opera Crossroads, she was one of the most famous people in Britain. Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and the peak of Nolly’s fame, she was axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation. With the boss’s words “all good things must come to an end” ringing in her ears, Noele Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for over 18 years. Helena Bonham Carter has signed on to play Nolly in the three-part drama which is expected in 2022 on ITV.
* Jon Richardson and wife Lucy Beaumont will host a new Christmas show for Channel 4. Jon & Lucy’s Christmas Sleepover will see them ‘get merry’ with Roisin Conaty, Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett. There’ll also be a few surprise guests along the way as the gang reflect on the highs and lows of 2021 and enjoy a boozy festive feast guaranteed to lead to misbehaving and chaos.
