If rumours are to believed Harry Hill has decided to finish TV Burp. A new series is set to begin on the 8th but speculation is that the collared comedian will only remain behind his desk until 2012.
The series had a rocky start with ITV not really sure where to place it but it found its groove once it was given the Saturday night slot and has since become a reason for the entire family to plonk themselves in-front of the TV at that time ever since.
Hill has said in the past how he finds Burp a challenge as it can only ever be as good as the TV it’s mocking but despite this TV Burp has never really “jumped the shark” and despite Harry’s despair at series like Freaky Eaters or Pineapple Dance Studios TV Burp was in the end a place that celebrated the madness of Television without any malice or mean spirited jibes. Burp is or was unique because it has become “cool” to have your series be given the Burp treatment. The series has also, in a strange way helped shows like Pineapple Dance Studios and others because let’s face it, if Harry hadn’t talked about them and introduced us to Louis Spence would we have really have discovered it for ourselves?
The series has gone downhill of late but only slightly, we didn’t care for the emphasis on The K Factor or the introduction of Brian Bello but we can happily forgive TV Burp for trying something new to spice up the format.
With TV Burp Harry Hill has done the near impossible. He has manged to give ITV a hit entertainment series which doesn’t feature singers or Ant & Dec and for that alone he should be commended. If Hill does bring Burp to an end it will be greatly missed by those of us who have looked forward to its zany view of TV ever y week I only hope it ends with a bang and not with a whimper. So savor the upcoming series as indications are it could be the last.
