Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World, E4

Did we like it?

Loved it. This US import – an animation featuring Lego-like gay characters and lots of near-the-knuckle gags – is hilarious.

What was good about it?

• Rick and Steve make a lovely couple, despite their little plastic bodies and little round heads. Okay, Steve is desperate to spice up their sex lives, but otherwise they seem to be perfectly compatible.

• Dana the bathtub-grouting bulldyke – who has not got a good word to say for anyone – and her partner Kirsten – who remains sweet natured throughout.

• Alan Cumming’s voice work. Until we read the credits, we had no idea it was him playing Chuck, the grumpy 50-year-old HIV-positive wheelchair user who is in a relationship with a dim teenager – with both of them popping lots of pills (for different reasons).

• The jokes about sperm donation which followed Dana and Kirsten’s request for Rick’s semen (aka axle grease). The highlight was the nightmare sequence when Kirsten sucked up the deposits left by men all over a grotty toilet cubicle.

• The pussy.

• There are no qualms about causing offence: prudes and some gays will hate its South Park-like boldness (eg Chuck to Evan: ““You married me when it was cool to have a boyfriend with AIDS.”)

What was bad about it?

• We can’t believe that the series can maintain the momentum. Surely every gag about gay life was crammed into the jam (and semen)-packed opening episode, called Guess Who’s Coming For Quiche? Where can it go from here?
