Many people frowned when An Audience With was included in ITV’s Greatest 50 Shows but this compilation showed why it deserved that “acclaim”

Presenter Michael Parkinson should stick to interviews

What was good about it?

• The spotting of 1980s celebs. That’s when celebs were really celebs. Proper celebs such as Gareth Hunt, Su Pollard and The Grumbleweeds.

• Playing games of Whose Dead? and Who Might Be Dead?

• Clips from all 40 shows right back to the first in 1979.

• Faith Brown saying “Oh shit” and then realising she was on camera.

• Victoria Wood – “In India when a husband dies, the widow throws herself on to the funeral pyre. In this country when a husband dies, the widow just goes into the kitchen and says:” OK Connie, 72 baps. You butter, I’ll slice’,”

• Seeing Muhammad Ali when he was young, pretty and sharp.

• Shirley Bassey telling Des O’Connor that she used to think he was gay because, after walking her to her hotel one night, he gave her a peck on the cheek and left.

• Bruce Forsyth, the King of working a crowd.

• Al Murray to reformed alcoholic Frank Skinner: “Come back Frank, come back. You’re not an alcoholic, you’re a publican’s friend.”

• Des O’Connor’s party piece.

• Reliving the days when ITV had some real names. And Brian Conley.

What was bad about it?

• Realising that we have always been obsessed with Z list celebrities.

• Remembering how un-PC comedy used to be.

• Garry Bushell in every crowd.

• The fawning laughter and over-the-top screaming.

• Freddie Starr throwing maggots at the audience. What a wag.

• The American comics failing to be funny.
