The Newsroom returns to Sky Atlantic

In late August, HBO’s THE NEWSROOM and Showtime’s HOUSE OF LIES will return exclusively to Sky Atlantic HD for their second seasons. Sky customers will be able to see the first episodes of both seasons even earlier when they are made available via Sky On Demand from 20 August.

Golden Globe®-nominated HBO drama series THE NEWSROOM, created by Oscar® winner Aaron Sorkin, is set at the fictional cable network ACN and follows the News Night team on their quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of a fickle audience, corporate mandates and tangled personal relationships. Golden Globe® nominee Jeff Daniels stars as News Night host Will McAvoy and Emily Mortimer stars as Mackenzie McHale, the show’s executive producer.

The second season picks up a year later in the days leading up to election night 2012. The News Night staff are being prepared to give depositions in a lawsuit, the circumstances of which unfold throughout the season. Covering the period from August 2011 to November 2012, the new season touches on the administration’s anti-terrorism policy, Occupy Wall Street, Troy Davis, Trayvon Martin, Benghazi and, of course, the primaries and general election.

Cast members returning for the second season are John Gallagher, Jr. as Jim Harper, Mackenzie’s loyal producer, currently covering the Romney campaign; Alison Pill as associate producer Maggie Jordan; Thomas Sadoski as Don Keefer, Will’s former executive producer; Dev Patel as resourceful self-made newsman Neal Sampat; Olivia Munn as financial news analyst Sloan Sabbith; and Oscar® nominee Sam Waterston as Charlie Skinner, Will’s old-school boss.

Oscar® winner Jane Fonda will be resuming her guest role as Leona Lansing, the CEO of ACN’s parent company, Atlantis World Media, while Hope Davis will return as gossip columnist Nina Howard.

Guest stars this season include Oscar® winner Marcia Gay Harden as Rebecca Halliday, a lawyer hired to defend ACN staffers in its wrongful-termination case; Hamish Linklater as Jerry Dantana, who temporarily replaces Jim when he leaves to cover the Romney campaign; Grace Gummer as Hallie Shea, a reporter competing with Jim on the Romney campaign; and Constance Zimmer as Taylor Warren, a Romney campaign press spokesperson who questions the coverage her campaign is getting from the media.

THE NEWSROOM is executive produced by Sorkin, Scott Rudin and Alan Poul.

Also returning to work with an altogether very different ethic are the employees of Galweather & Stearn management consultancy in the second season of dark comedy HOUSE OF LIES. Recently renewed for a third season, this dark comedy stars Don Cheadle in his Golden Globe® award-winning and Emmy® nominated performance as Marty Kaan. Marty is the big-money earner at Galweather Stearn, who commands a hot, young team known as The Pod: Jeannie (Kristen Bell), Clyde (Ben Schwartz) and Doug (Josh Lawson). Marty and The Pod’s work life revolves around first-class travel, top-shelf liquor and anything they can charge the client on a black AmEx. Marty is the ultimate power player and under his direction, this ruthless, pull-no punches team is here to beat the corporate suckers at their own game – and they’re loving every minute of it.

This season, The Pod – especially Marty and Jeannie – must deal with the fall-out from the big merger showdown. On the home front, Marty is thrown when his son Roscoe (Donis Leonard Jr.) decides to move in with his unbalanced mother, Monica (Dawn Olivieri), and his younger brother (Larenz Tate) and old friend (Nia Long) reappear in his life.

The new season will also see a guest spot from Oscar® winner Matt Damon. In the fourth episode,, the superstar calls on Galweather Stearn to find him a charity to enhance his image.

HOUSE OF LIES is based on the hit tell-all book from best-selling author Martin Kihn (House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time). Produced by SHOWTIME, the series is created and executive produced by Matthew Carnahan. Jessika Borsiczky, Stephen Hopkins and Don Cheadle also serve as executive producers.

THE NEWSROOM Season 2 and HOUSE OF LIES Season 2 will air exclusively on Sky Atlantic HD and Sky Atlantic +1 from late August.
