In this very special podcast TheCustardTV talks to TV producer and founder of Red Production Company Nicola Shindler about her career working behind the scenes in TV.
Shindler started life as a producer on such hit shows as Cracker and Our Friends in the North. Soon she formed her own production company – Red and immediately had a hit on her hands with Channel 4’s Queer as Folk. Over the past fifteen years Red has produced some of the UK’s best-loved dramas including Clocking Off, Bob and Rose, Exile and Unforgiven. Red’s most recent successes have included the BBC1 romantic comedy Last Tango in Halifax and ITV’s cop drama Scott and Bailey.
In this interview, Luke and Matt chat to Nicola about the state of British TV, what she considers a good show and why she works with the same writers over and over again. Nicola talks about the positive feedback she’s had over Last Tango in Halifax as well as why she thinks there’s a snobbery surrounding TV.
She also reveals some of the projects that Red has coming up and voices her pleasure about two of Red’s programmes being nominated for BAFTAs.
Scott & Bailey continues Wednesdays with Series 2 of Last Tango in Halifax filming in the Summer.
