8.30pm Live at Edinburgh Castle BBC1 – A spectacular live concert staged in front of Scotland’s most iconic landmark, as daylight turns to dusk. The show caters for all, with hit songs from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Kaiser Chiefs, Jessie J, Culture Club, Paloma Faith, OneRepublic, Rizzle Kicks, Ella Henderson, Il Divo, Katherine Jenkins, Alfie Boe and Pumeza. Bill Bailey is on hand to provide the musical comedy, surprise guests appear too and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are on stage to accompany many of the performances – not least the spectacular finale. Hosted by The One Show’s Alex Jones the concert also includes the final leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay before it arrives in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.
8.00pm The Mill Channel 4 – Channel 4’s highest-rating drama of 2013, The Mill, returns in a new six-part series covering 1838 to 1842 and focusing on the lives of the mill workers against a backdrop of turbulent social, political and industrial change. This is a time of the great Chartist rallies and the birth of modern democracy, with the movement for the right for working class men to vote sweeping the country.
8.00pm My Child is a Monkey Five – Documentary examining ‘monkids’ – monkeys which, when adopted by adults, are dressed in clothes, nappied, fed at the dinner table and treated like children. In addition to following the families who adopt the monkeys, the programme also explores the wider ‘monkid’ industry, looking at the breeders who take baby monkeys from their mothers at a young age and the sanctuaries who rescue abandoned ‘monkids’.

9.00pm Child Genius Channel 4 – 20 of the most gifted youngsters in the UK battle it out to be crowned Britain’s brightest child in the Child Genius of the Year competition. Overseen by high IQ society British Mensa, this four-part series follows some exceptional seven to 12-year-old children and their parents. In this first stage of the competition they face two gruelling rounds: Advanced Maths – where questions are beyond many an adult’s capability; and Memory Recall, where they have to memorise and then mentally navigate four zones of the London Underground map – a staggering 170 stations.
9.00pm Rich Hall’s California Stars BBC4 – Rich Hall continues his cultural critique of American people and places. California’s first settlements were borne of missionary zeal. It promised a haven from marauders, banditos and mercenaries. Since then it has wiled us with unlimited gold, boundless harvests, silver screen-stardom, dotcom salvation and hi-tech silicon marvels. It has always been a place that promises a good chance of success-if you’re youthful or white. And if you’re Mexican, it at least promises a decent chance of survival.
9.10pm Seven Wonders of the Commonwealth BBC1 – One-off special to herald the start of the Commonwealth Games. Clare Balding, Denise Lewis, Anita Rani, Dan Snow and Reggie Yates – travel around the globe to marvel at seven diverse natural wonders and meet some of the two billion members of the Commonwealth.
10.00pm Family Guy BBC3 – Double bill of new episodes. Peter takes the whole family out to dinner to celebrate having a rotten shrimp removed from his mouth by the dentist. The waiter spins him a tale about the pretend treasure map on Peter’s placemat, but when Peter follow the clues he finds a treasure hunt and soon everyone in Quahog is racing to find it first.

10.45pm People Just Do Nothing BBC3 – New 4-part comedy that was first shown on BBC iPlayer. Mockumentary series following West London pirate radio station Kurupt FM. Led by self-proclaimed garage legend MC Grindah and his second-in-command DJ Beats, these hapless individuals share the secrets behind running an illegal business and demonstrate that chasing your dreams is actually a full-time job. Kurupt FM’s secret location is threatened after complaints about noise from the neighbours. The crew call on local entrepreneur Chabuddy G to help them find a soundproofing solution.
10.00pm Virtually Famous E4 – Kevin McHale, star of Glee, hosts a brand new comedy panel show that celebrates the weird and wonderful online sensations that have got millions of us talking and sharing. From globally famous viral memes and twitter rants to the greatest You Tube posts and Vine shorts, the rival teams battle for points in a series of witty and upbeat rounds. Each week, there will also be special guest appearances from the stars of some of the most famous online sensations. Kicking off the first show, Kevin and team captains Seann Walsh and Radio 1’s Chris Stark are joined by comedians Chris Ramsey and Romesh Ranganathan, Countdown’s Rachel Riley and actor Tyger Drew-Honey as they face a lip-sync challenge and witness the wonder of a cat video like no other.
