In an age when anyone who can crack an egg seems to get a TV cookery show, we weren’t won over by the newest “celeb chef” Valentine Warner.
What was good about it?
• Valentine isn’t obsessed in forcing his personality on the programme. No shouting. Hooray.
• We were amused by Welsh hill farmer Alun Edwards’s confession: “I always try to pick attractive-looking sheep.” and his mother’s unconvincing praise for Valentine’s shoulder of lamb dish: “Very nice, very unusual,”
What was bad about it?
• It’s yet another show that gets excited by fresh, local and seasonal British ingredients. The vast majority of people will never like eating rabbit, however many times TV chefs bang on about bunnies in stews.
• The posh Valentine’s Sloaney tendencies – his braying laugh, his Barbour jacket, the similarities with the awful David Cameron, his childish expressions (“Wow-wee!”) etc.
• The description of truffles as “little black hard balls of glory” or “the Tiffany toff of my culinary hitlist.”
