What we learnt from the Edinburgh TV Festival

Last week the Custard TV team where invited to Edinburgh for the 2014 Guardian International TV Festival. It was a hugely enjoyable few days mixing with TV’s elite and Matt Donnelly of our podcast team. Here are a few interesting things we learnt during our time at the festival.

  • BBC One & Two could schedule key BBC Three programming in primetime or 10.35pm slots.
  • Danny Cohen admitted to being ‘deeply disappointed’ by the behaviour of Jeremy Clarkson but couldn’t see Top Gear changing any time soon.
  • Channel 4 have ordered a new series that will see fixed rig cameras in bedded within a remote tribe in Ethiopia. 
  • Channel 4 have ordered a drama on the collation government.
  • The average age of a BBC One viewer is 59
  • BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore announced an ambitious new documentary series for the channel that will go behind the scenes of The Metropolitan Police entitled The Met. 
  • Moore axed long running 8pm drama Waterloo Road to allow the channel to be more daring in the 8pm slot.
  • Moore commissioned comedy Boomers on the fifth day in the job as she didn’t wanted to lose the cast.
  • Happy Valley is returning because Sally Wainwright is really keen to write more.
  • ITV Controller Peter Fincham feels he’s done the right thing spending a lot on reality series Rising Star which is set to début in the first part of 2015.
  • ITVBe is to become the home of ITV2 hits The Only Way is Essex and Real Housewives.
  • New home grown dramas may air exclusively on ITVEncore but the channel won’t compete with ITV.
  • BBC drama comissioner Ben Stephenson described the script of Line of Duty as “incredible”.
  • Writer Jeff Pope thinks Cilla Black hasn’t seen his new biopic that sees Sheridan Smith take on the role of the singer and TV presenter.
  • The new series of Inside No. 9 starts filming in October.
  • Sky’s new medical drama Critical looks unmissable.
