Dexter, FX/ITV1

Did we like it?

The buzz around this serial killer drama was pretty intense so we were expecting a classic to fill that Soprano-sized void, that West Wing-sized wilderness. Alas, Dexter’s not that good. But it is good, perverse and thrilling.

What was good about it?

• Michael C Hall (he was in Six Feet Under) as central character Dexter – and actually looking quite hot now he’s added a bit of a tan and some stubble. He’s a little bit creepy, a little bit charming but otherwise he’s a non-conformist hero, outside the mainstream, full of the sort of thoughts no-one else has, committing the sorts of actions (grisly murder) that should have us hating him.

• Lots of gruesome moments (allowing us to laugh at our squeamish tell-me-when-it’s-finished partners) because Dexter is not only a murderer; he’s a blood spatter (splatter?) expert employed by the Miami police.

• Intelligence and humour are splashed around every bit as much as the red stuff.

• The flashback’s to Dexter’s childhood when he got kicks from killing animals. His father was on hand, helpfully (and without Supernanny to guide him), to channel those psychopathic needs into murdering monsters who had evaded justice.

What was bad about it?

• Dexter’s delight in bumping off baddies (a paedophile and a rapist in episode one) may get a bit tiresome. The stories of these unsavoury characters were only sketched in, so we didn’t get close to sharing Dexter’s delight in their twisted demise.

• Dexter is the only good character – the others, especially his unconfident cop sister, fail to grab, although the black detective who finds Dexter creepy (surprisingly no-one else does) may become interesting.

• Dexter’s voiceover is overused.
